There are so many options for male and female hair loss hair systems. As a company that specialises in bonded systems or hair pieces, we focus on poly or Skin bases, as well as breathable bases that are a blend of Lace and poly.
Back when hair pieces or toupees were gaining in popularity, they were often made with a thicker poly perimeter and were sewn in or clipped into the clients biological hair.
Certainly, this was the first type of hair piece our founder, Scott Hickman, used back in 1991 when he got his first hair piece in Brisbane, Queensland.
Few were using tape and glue back then, instead relying on clips, that would pull the biological hair out over time, making the hair loss even worse.

Our client Brian is using a Breathable Replique Hair Piece after years of using our traditional Skin bases.
It is rare when an innovation to an industry can have such a dramatic effect, but the introduction of full poly or skin bases changed the hair replacement industry. These bases came in different thicknesses, hair density and best of all they could be cut down to size, allowing for in salon customisation and much faster processing than traditional custom hair piece orders that can take months.
Perhaps the most striking benefit was the wearers ability to bond the hair piece to the scalp for a month or so. Combined with adhesive glue and tape from companies like Walkers and Pro Hair Labs, these skin bases were a dramatic step up from clip in hair units.
Adhering or bonding with glue or tape allowed a hair system wearer sleep, gym, shower and even swim in their semi permanent hair.

For someone suffering from male pattern baldness, alopecia or any other type of hair loss, having a hair replacement solution can be life changing and give back their confidence.
Replique’s Scott Hickman was just grateful to no longer look in the mirror and see hair loss. But the traditional poly and lace blend that breathable bases were made of, were thick and felt very wig like to wear.
It wasn’t until the advent of the skin bases, that we were able to style the hair up and off the face, as the breathable bases had to be thick enough for clips to be sewn into them.
There were other options such as Lace fronts, but these had their own challenges with glue and tape seeping through them.
In more recent years Replique have been using thinner poly perimeter bases with lace on top, allowing for the best of both base types.
The Breathable Replique base comes in a durable but discrete .08mm poly base on the edge of the unit, allowing it to be styled back off the face. But the dimension of the poly is wide enough for several pieces of tape to be adhered width wise to allow a very strong bond.
While skin bases are still the most popular, we are seeing a huge increase in clients choosing the breathable base, especially in areas serviced by our Brisbane salon, such as the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and other parts of far North Queensland.
